Islamic fasting is a kind of worship, so calling out dua while initiating and concluding the fasting process is spiritually enriching. These duas are not words that are read with our lips only but ways and tools of reaching a state where one communicates with Allah and is thankful for his blessings.
Dua when breaking Fast (Suhoor)
During and after Suhoor, what can only be seen is Niyyah’s intention to fast the following day. It reflects the sincerity and purpose behind the act of fasting:
وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
(“I intend to fast tomorrow for Ramadan.”)
Such an intention makes fasting exclusively in the path of Allah; this is the requirement of the passion for purity in worshipping Allah.
Dua After The Fast Breaking (Iftar)
As the fast ends at sunset, Muslims recite the dua to break the fast:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
(“O Allah, I fasted for You, and I believe in You, and with Your provision, I break my fast.”)Alternatively, another widely recited dua is:
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
(“The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is assured if Allah wills.”)
Spiritual Importance
- Gratitude to Allah: These duas emphasize gratitude to Allah for food that sustains one during the day and gives one strength to fast the following day.
- Fulfillment of Sunnah: Saying these duas is based on the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) advice regarding their significance.
- Blessings at Iftar: The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The fasting person has a supplication that is not rejected at the time of breaking the fast.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1753)
Practical Guidance for Muslims
- At Suhoor: Remember to wake up and take the pre-dawn meal because that is a Sunnah encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad.
- During Ramadan, give Iftar and break the fast with dates and water, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended.
- Be Mindful of Timing: You must say the dua before consuming anything.
