As the recorded words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are viewed, the Hadith is still a powerful source of spiritual guidance and wisdom that Muslims enjoy far and wide. Many different types of hadiths are found in the comprehensive hadith collections. Among them, there are 40 short hadith, which are usually called “the forty hadith.

These hadiths are Islam’s main principles and teachings in their moral and behavioural parts. They provide information about behaviours that help emulate the Prophet and relate to his principles. Therefore, they are practical suggestions for Muslims to follow in whatever daily circumstances.

In this article, we will consider these 40 short hadiths in English, which will guide you on their meanings and uses.

The 40 Short Hadiths

Hadith 1: Deeds are by intentions

40 short hadith pdf

40 short hadith in islam at kanzolquran

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, deeds are only done with intentions. Indeed, every person will have only what they intended. Whoever emigrated to Allah and his messenger, his emigration is for Allah and his messenger. Whoever emigrated to get something in the world or to marry a woman his emigration is for that to which he emigrated.

Hadith 2: Islam, faith, and excellence

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one day when a man appeared with white clothes and black hair. There were no signs of travel on him, and we did not recognise him. He sat before the Prophet, rested his knees by his knees, and placed his hands on his thighs. The man said, “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.” The Prophet said:

Islam is to testify that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; to establish prayer; to give charity; to fast during the month of Ramadan; and to perform pilgrimage to the House if a way is possible.

The man said, “You have spoken truthfully.” We were surprised that he asked him and then said he was truthful. He said, “Tell me about faith.” The Prophet said:

Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and good and evil providence.

The man said, “You have spoken truthfully. Tell me about excellence.” The Prophet said:

Excellence is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for He indeed sees you if you do not see Him.

The man said, “Tell me about the final hour.” The Prophet said:

The one asking does not know more than the one asking.

The man said, “Tell me about its signs.” The Prophet said:

The slave girl will give birth to her master, and you will see barefoot, naked, and dependent shepherds compete in the construction of tall buildings.

Then the man left, and I remained. The Prophet said to me:

O Umar, do you know who he was?

I said, “Allah and his messenger know best.” The Prophet said:

Verily, it was Gabriel who came to teach you your religion.

Hadith 3: Pillars of Islam

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Islam is built upon five pillars: worshipping Allah and disbelieving in what is worshipped beside him; establishing prayer; giving charity; performing the Hajj pilgrimage to the house; and fasting during Ramadan.

Hadith 4: Providence

Abdullah ibn Masud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop. He is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period, and then the angel who blows the spirit into him is sent to him. He is commanded regarding four matters: to write down his provision, his life span, his deeds, and whether he is blessed or damned. By Allah, other than whom there is no God, one of you acts like the people of Paradise until he is, but an arm’s length from it, and what is written overtakes him, so he acts like the people of Hellfire, and he enters it. Verily, one of you acts like the people of Hellfire until he is at an arm’s length from it, and what is written overtakes him, so he acts like the people of Paradise and enters it.

Hadith 5: Religious innovation

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

Whoever innovates into our matter that it does not belong to will be rejected.

Hadith 6: Lawful and unlawful are clear

Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the law is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Thus, he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself regarding his religion and his honour, and he who falls into doubtful matters will fall into the unlawful as the shepherd who pastures near a sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Verily, every king has a sanctum, and the sanctum of Allah is His prohibition. Verily, in the body is a piece of flesh; if sound, the entire body is sound, and if corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.

Hadith 7: Religion is Good Will الدين النصيحة

Tamim al-Dari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the religion is sincerity.

We said, “To whom?” The Prophet said:

To Allah, His book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and their common people.

Hadith 8: Jihad in the way of Allah

Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

I have been commanded to fight the people until they say there is no God but Allah. If they say there is no God but Allah, then they will be granted protection from me for their lives and property, except by right of justice, and their reckoning is with Allah.

Then, the Prophet recited the verse:

Verily, you are only a reminder. You are not over them as a dictator.

Hadith 9: Responsibility within one’s capacity

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

What I have prohibited for you, avoid. Do what I have commanded you to do as much as you can. Verily, those before you were ruined only due to their excessive questioning and contradicting their prophets.

Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 7288

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Leave me with what I have left you. When I narrate a saying to you, take it from me. Verily, those before you were ruined only because they excessively questioned and contradicted their prophets.

Hadith 10: Restriction to what is lawful and wholesome

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

O people, Allah is pure, and He accepts only what is pure. Verily, Allah has commanded the believers as He has commanded His Messengers. Allah said, O Messengers, eat good things and act righteously, for I know what you do. (23:51) And Allah said, O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you. (2:172)

Abu Huraira added:

Then, the Prophet mentioned a man who travelled far, becoming messy and dusty. He raised his hands to the sky, saying, “O Lord! O Lord!” while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is illegal, and he is nourished by the illegal, so how can he be answered?

Al-Hasan ibn Ali reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt. Verily, truth brings peace of mind, and falsehood sows doubt.

Hadith 12: Leaving what does not concern the Muslim

‘Ali ibn Husayn reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, from the perfection of Islam, a person leaves what does not concern him.

Hadith 13: Perfection of faith

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

None of you will have faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 13

In another narration, the Prophet said:

It is unlawful to shed the blood of a Muslim who testifies that there is no Allah but Allah and I am the Messenger of Allah, except in one of three cases:

  • The married person who commits adultery.

  • Legal retaliation for murder.

  • A person who abandons their religion and secedes from the community.

Young man, I will teach you some words. Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be aware of Allah, and you will find Him before you. If you ask, ask Allah. If you seek help, seek help from Allah. If the nations gathered together to benefit you, they could not benefit you unless Allah had decreed it for you. And if the nations gathered together to harm you, they could not harm you unless Allah had decreed it for you. The pens have been lifted, and the pages have dried.

Hadith 23: Hasten to good deeds

Abu Malik al-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Purity is half of faith. The praise of Allah fills the scale, as the glorification and praise of Allah fill everything between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light, charity is a proof, and patience is luminous. The Quran is a decisive proof for you or against you. All people begin the day by trading for their soul, either setting it free or ensuring its ruin.

Allah Almighty said: O My servants, I have forbidden injustice for myself, and I have forbidden it among you, so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except those I have guided, so seek guidance from Me, and I will guide you.

O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food from Me, and I will feed you.

O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me, and I will clothe you.

O My servants, you sin by night and day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me, and I will forgive you.

Hadith 25: Types of good deeds

Abu Dharr reported: The companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, the rich have taken the rewards. They perform prayer as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they give charity from their extra wealth.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Has not Allah made for you ways to give charity? In every glorification of Allah, there is charity. In every declaration of His greatness, there is charity, and in praise of Him is charity. In every declaration of His oneness, there is charity; enjoining good is charity, and forbidding evil is charity. And in a man’s intimate relations with his wife is charity.

They said, “O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for one who satisfies his passions?” The Prophet said:

Do you see that if he satisfied his passions with the unlawful, he would be burdened with sin? Likewise, if he satisfied himself with the lawful, he would be rewarded.

Hadith 26: Reconciliation between people

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Charity is due upon every joint of the people for every day the sun rises. Justly reconciling two people is charity. Helping a man with his animal and lifting his luggage is charity. A kind word is charity. Every step you take towards the mosque is charity, and removing harmful things from the road is charity.

Hadith 27: Righteousness is good character

Al-Nawwas ibn Sam’an reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Righteousness is a good character, and sin is what wavers in your heart, and you hate for people to find out about it.

Hadith 28: Duty to uphold the Sunnah

Al-‘Irbad ibn Sariyah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed with us one day. Then, he faced us and delivered an eloquent sermon that brought tears to our eyes and shook our hearts. It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is as if this is a farewell address. What do you instruct for us?” The Prophet said:

I advise you to fear Allah, listen, and obey, even if an Abyssinian enslaved person is put in charge of you. Whoever lives after me will see many conflicts. You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the righteous, guided successors. Hold firmly to it as if biting with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters, for every new matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.

Hadith 29: What admits one into Paradise

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise and keep me away from the Hellfire.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

You have asked about an enormous matter, yet it is easy for those for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prayer; give charity; fast the month of Ramadan; and perform pilgrimage to the house.

Then, the Prophet said:

Shall I not tell you about the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sins as water extinguishes fire; and prayer is a man’s late-night prayer.

Then, the Prophet recited the verse:

They arise from their beds and supplicate to their Lord in fear and hope. They spend from what we have provided them, for no one knows what has been hidden for them of comfort as a reward for what they used to do. (32:16)

Then, the Prophet said:

Shall I not tell you about the head of the matter and its peak?

I said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said:

The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and jihad is its peak.

Then the Prophet said:

Shall I not tell you how to achieve all of this?

I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet pointed to his tongue, and he said:

Restrain this.

I said, “O Prophet of Allah, will what we say be held against us?” The Prophet said:

May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’adh! Is there anything that topples people onto their faces in Hellfire but the harvest of their tongues?

Hadith 30: Rights of Allah Almighty

Abu Tha’laba al-Khushani reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah has made duties obligatory; do not neglect them. He has set limits; do not transgress them. He has made some things sacred; do not violate them. He has remained silent on matters as a mercy for you, not out of forgetfulness, so do not search them out.

Hadith 31: True meaning of asceticism

Sahl ibn Sa’d al-Sa’idi reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed which will make Allah and people love me.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Renounce the world, and Allah will love you. Renounce what people possess, and people will love you.

Hadith 33: The burden of proof is on the claimant

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

If people were given their claims, men would claim the wealth and lives of other people. Instead, the burden of proof is on the accuser, and the defendant must take an oath.

Hadith 34: Enjoining good and forbidding evil

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever among you sees evil, let him change it with his hand. If he is unable to do so, then use his tongue. If he cannot do so, then with his heart, that is the weakest level of faith.

Hadith 35: Brotherhood of Islam

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Do not envy each other, do not outbid each other, do not hate each other, do not turn away from each other, and do not outsell each other. Instead, be servants of Allah as brothers. The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him, humiliate him, or look down upon him. Righteousness is here.

Then, the Prophet pointed to his chest three times, and he continued:

It is enough evil for a man to look down upon his Muslim brother. The entirety of the Muslim is sacred to another Muslim: his life, wealth, and honour.

Hadith 36: Gathering to remember Allah

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever helps ease one’s difficulty, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and the hereafter. Whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the hereafter. Allah helps the servant as long as he helps his brother. Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make it easy for him to reach Paradise, for people do not gather together in the houses of Allah, reciting the book of Allah and studying it together. Still, tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will cover them, angels will surround them, and Allah will mention them to those near Him. Whoever is slow to do good deeds will not be hastened by his lineage.

Hadith 37: Favor of Allah Almighty

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah has recorded good and evil deeds, and He has made them clear. Whoever intends to perform a good deed but does not do it, Allah will record it as a complete good deed. If he wants to do it and does so, Allah Almighty will record it as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times as much or even more. If he intends to do an evil deed and does not do it, Allah will record for him one complete good deed. Allah will record a single evil deed if he does it.

Hadith 38: Means of nearness to Allah

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah said: Whoever shows hostility to a friend, I have declared war upon him. My servant does not grow closer to me with anything more beloved to me than the duties I have imposed upon him. My servant continues to grow closer to me with extra good works until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asked me something, I would surely give it to him. If he asked me for refuge, I would grant it to him. I do not hesitate to do anything, just as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to displease him.

Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller along a path.

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, would say:
